Jay, The Man Behind The Medicine

James (Jay) Bowers serves as the College Coordinator for the Bariatric, Trauma, General Surgery, Colorectal, Surgical Oncology, Oral Maxillofacial, and Plastic Surgery teams at West Virginia University Hospitals. With a deep-rooted passion for nursing and service, Jay has built a career defined by leadership, compassion, and commitment—both within the hospital setting and beyond.

Jay’s longstanding dedication to Camp Kno-Koma, also known as the Diabetic Camp of West Virginia, began while he was still a nursing student. Initially joining as a summer counselor, he transitioned to the role of cabin nurse upon graduation. His dedication and leadership quickly led to his election to the Board of Directors, where he currently serves as Secretary. Each year, Jay continues to use his personal vacation time to return to camp, serving as the cabin nurse for the oldest boys' cabin and helping young campers manage their diabetes in a safe, supportive environment.

Jay is also deeply involved in the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) at the local, state, and national levels. He has held various national committee roles and is currently serving as President-Elect of his local chapter. His work helps shape the future of perioperative nursing and advocate for best practices in surgical care.

A committed humanitarian, Jay dedicates additional vacation time each year to participate in two surgical mission trips, bringing essential surgical care to underserved communities. This year, he and his team will return to Haiti for two weeks, providing life-changing procedures to children and families in need.

Jay Bowers exemplifies the heart of nursing: dedication to others, a drive for excellence, and a passion for service—whether in the OR, at summer camp, or across international borders.
